January 9th 2022 (Stoic Boot Camp challenge version)

Early to bed, early to rise.

Today’s challenge is to go to bed two hours early. Alright. I need to do this.

“In one of his letters, Seneca mentions a man named Antipodes. His is a cautionary tale. “He has never seen the sun rise or set,” Seneca writes. “Do you think that these men know how to live, if they do not know when to live? Do these men fear death, if they have buried themselves alive? They are as weird as the birds of night.”

So before I get into the whats and whys I have to note according to Ryan in his email Seneca writes the first vampire fanfic about a chap named Antipodes whose name translates to, as our more literate friends will recognize, as “In geography, the antipode of any spot on Earth is the point on Earth’s surface diametrically opposite to it. A pair of points antipodal to each other are situated such that a straight line connecting the two would pass through Earth’s center. Antipodal points are as far away from each other as possible.”

Seneca needed to call on Buffy.

So back to the task at hand. I need to do this. In fact, this is something I have tried (and failed) to implement recently as I confessed in my Jan 5th report “Often I will set rules to better use my time (On a side note, my reading before bed 2022 hit a bit of a snag last night as I substituted play Mass Effect Legendary edition for two hours. I enjoyed it very much, but still. It is the principle of the matter.)”

I work a second shift which has some advantages such as taking the cat to the vet or Wednesday morning Costco runs and some disadvantages such as no social life five out of seven days. (Not that the other two days have not really been stellar lately either. Perhaps a future challenge will address that?)

One real problem of getting off of work at 1am is not getting to sleep till 4 to 5 am which, as one can imagine, really makes getting eight solid hours in a chore and creates a level of insomnia. I often waste the hours between 1am and 5am on half awake YouTube watching or playing video games that I cannot enjoy knowing I need to get to bed soon.

The less said about my dietary habits between 1am and 5am, the better as well.

So I have managed to continue to take a cold shower every day (per Jan 3rd’s challenge) and this seems to be the, let’s call it motivation, I need to stick to my original goal of reading to sleep after work.

Till tomorrow morning (Hopefully bright eyed and bushy tailed).
